KEHILAT NITZAN TIKKUN OLAM - out in the Community

Despite the pandemic, over the last twelve months the volunteers of Tikkun Olam  have continued to be very active. Here are some of the things we’ve been doing:

Food prepared and delivered every Tuesday by volunteers (Food Van with Father Bob) to:

  • Residents in rooming houses.
  • Take away meals to visitors in Alma Park St Kilda

Supplying Pantry Items to:

  • Richmond Churches Food Centre for Yarra residents with food insecurity. Warm winter clothing and personal hygiene packs
  • For homeless men with mental and physical health challenges, with Avalon Centre Connectivity
  • Providing social opportunities for over 70 year olds to alleviate social isolation  through movies, lectures, afternoon teas, excursions and Book Club.
  • Russian Jewish ladies of the St Kilda community housing estate- providing activities  and social/entertainment experiences
  • Support for members experiencing illness or infirmity.
  • Nitzanim Singers – regular singing performances at aged care facilities with resident  participation

Donations to other organisations:

  • Flying Fox/Camp Sababa to sponsor shabbatons (weekends away) providing social  interaction opportunities for young people with learning disabilities, autism and  downs syndrome and their siblings also providing respite for families. ∙ Jewish Care:

  • Food Bank
  • Empower/Planet Shaker Church for unemployed non-residents ineligible for  government support
  • NSW Rural Fire Service and others:
  • Flood and fire appeals and other disasters
  • Kosher Meals on Wheels

Meals for mourners of our congregation.

For the next twelve months, we want to carry on doing all this … and more:

Additional projects identified as needing KNTO support in 2021/22

  • Friendship Circle – alleviating isolation and the sense of community exclusion of  children and young adults with special needs
  • Paw Pals – A Mackillop Education Service using trained therapy dogs to assist  children who are currently disengaged or at risk of disengaging from education ∙ Alfred Hospital Neurology Unit – 4 walkers and 100 pairs of grip sole socks ∙ Indigenous Literacy Foundation- providing culturally appropriate books for children  in remote communities.

We are an all-volunteer organisation, and depend entirely on donations from  generous well-wishers, and on the time and dedication of over 100 volunteers.  We are most grateful for the support of our congregants and encourage ongoing  support as there are many more identified areas of need in the wider community  which we would love to address were we financially in a position to do so.
